Flex
Fuels first phase of development is centred on the development
of a Crush Plant to be located in the Port of Cardiff, South Wales.
This is in order to establish security of supply of feedstock.
By
providing a high volume local Crush Plant, Flex Fuels has been
able to gain the support of local farmers in the area. They have
committed, through their large co-operative group, to supply a
large proportion of the Rape Seed Feedstock that Flex Fuels will
require to produce the high
quality raw RSO for the second phase BioDiesel
plant.
In
addition to gaining the crush margin, Flex Fuels also produces
a co-product from the crush process. From the raw seed around
36% of the weight is produced to RSO, with the remaining 64% as
solids and a little combined oil, collectively termed OSR Cake.
This
OSR Cake will be sold for either animal feed, where it currently
commands good prices, or to co-firing power stations eager for
a source of high calorie, consistent quality "Green Fuel"
to take advantage of the UK subsidy regime for renewable fuels.
Good prices are also available in this undersupplied market.
The
Crush Plant technology selected is standard and supplied by a
leading manufacturer. Phase two of the Flex Fuels project will
see the mechanical Crush Plant converted, as a planned retrofit,
into a Solvent Extraction Plant, enabling Flex Fuels to treat
up to 225,000 tonnes of seed per annum at full capacity, with
headroom for expansion.
The
Cardiff site, long-term leased from Associated
British Ports, will utilise around 6 hectares in area, suitable
for both our Crush plant and planned BioDiesel refinery.
Located on a deep water port with an excellent road, rail and
petrochemical infrastructure, Flex Fuels considers that the Cardiff
site is very well located for UK wide supply of input material
and offtake of finished products, and in the future, the import
and export of these materials and products.
